| Nicole Foss – Artist Statement
I select images for their significance as well as aesthetic value, often taking them out of context in the process. In choosing a single image from nearly infinite variety, I am saying – this is important enough to “set in stone.” When the picture is encased in clear, magnifying resin, set it in sterling silver and embellished with glass or gemstones, it takes on additional value as well as new facets of meaning. Resin has many qualities of glass and quartz crystal, but starts out in liquid form, and “plays well” with paper. When I work with resin I am reminded that things can be made more permanent than they already are. I like having the ability to reify images, to take a picture and make people look at it, consider it, ask why it is being worn on the body. Jewelry is a form of expression, both deeply personal and public, and I find it an optimal medium for communicating thoughts and inspiration through images made three-dimensional. |

Creating jewelry allows me to merge art, personal expression, and adornment. Culture, heritage, horizons, and nature are all dominant themes in my work, as well as bright colors and repeating patterns that command attention and draw the eye.
